[00:03.10]the cost of doing business has emerged as
[00:05.87]a key issue in the battle for the Democratic
[00:08.03]Party's presidential nomination between
[00:10.44]Massachusetts Senator John Kerry and North Carolina Senator John Edwards.
[00:15.05]For David Bevard of Galesburg, Illinois,
[00:17.57]the concern over lost jobs is not an abstract issue.
[00:20.88]He has worked for 30 years making refrigerators
[00:23.83]for the Maytag Corporation and now faces
[00:26.57]the prospect of having to look for a new job
[00:28.98]just as he was approaching retirement.
[00:31.28]"We have always believed that if you worked hard, paid your dues,
[00:34.99]played by the rules and produced a quality product that
[00:37.19]you would get rewarded in the end," he said.
[00:38.77]"Instead, our reward is that Maytag is taking the 1,600 jobs
[00:42.19]out of Galesburg [Illinois] and moving them to Reynosa,
[00:46.19]This is going to be devastating to our community of 34,000 people and,
[00:50.58]quite frankly, we are not alone."
[00:52.27]Mr. Bevard spoke at a rally this week sponsored by the AFL-CIO,
[00:52.96]the country's largest federation of labor unions,
[00:55.76]representing more than 13 million workers.
[00:58.07]The union organization now backs Senator John Kerry for
[01:00.98]the Democratic Party's presidential nomination.
[01:03.47]The concern over lost jobs has become a driving
[01:06.42]issue in the Democratic race and may have
[01:08.54]helped Senator John Edwards to a stronger than expected
[01:11.46]second place finish in Tuesday's Wisconsin primary.
[01:14.66]Senator Edwards says he has been less supportive
[01:17.04]of free trade deals than his rival, Senator Kerry,
[01:19.78]and he now focuses on the job loss issue in his campaign speeches.
[01:24.28]"We have shipped more than a million good jobs overseas
[01:27.41]in a race for cheaper labor," said John Edwards.

[01:33.60]said about two weeks ago that the outsourcing of American jobs is a good thing.

[01:46.34]For his part, Senator Kerry is now critical
[01:49.94]of free trade agreements and says future
[01:51.82]agreements should include tougher job and environmental protections.
[01:55.49]The job loss issue has become a potential weakness
[01:58.19]for President Bush as he gears up his re-election campaign.
[02:01.18]The president's difficulties on the issue were compounded recently when
[02:04.96]the chairman of the president's Council of Economic Advisers,
[02:08.09]Gregory Mankiw, said the outsourcing or transfer of U.S.
[02:11.69]jobs overseas was a good thing for the U.S. economy.
[02:15.11]Jack Pitney is a political scientist
[02:17.41]at Claremont-McKenna College in Los Angeles.
[02:19.90]He says the comment amounted to a political stumble for the White House.
[02:23.78]"Well, from the standpoint of strict
[02:25.87]economics you could make that case," he said.
